Sam Rayburn ISD Gifted and
Talented Information
As of the fall of 2009, TEA has revised the Texas State
Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students. As a result, Sam
Rayburn ISD has updated the district GT policy and revamped our Gifted/Talented
program.
Step 1: Students can be nominated by parents,
teachers, school staff, and/or members of the community by completing the
following process:
- Parent/Guardian fills out the following forms and
returns them to the principal, GT coordinator, or classroom teacher within
one week.
- Parent inventory
- Renzulli inventory
- Parent permission to test form [Note: Parents
have the right to refuse testing for their child. Under those
circumstances, the screening process is halted and the child will not be
considered for placement in the GT program.]
- Teacher fills out the following forms and returns
them to the principal or GT coordinator.
- Nomination form
- Renzulli inventory (fill out if parent is not
nominating student)
- Student profile form
Step 2: After all required forms have been
completed, signed, and returned, qualified staff will begin the testing phase
for identification. In some cases, it will be necessary to administer more
than one test to a student to determine specific gifted areas.

Students who are nominated will be initially assessed using the Gifted
and Talented Evaluation Scales (GATES).

Further testing may include, but are not limited to the:
a.
Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS),
b.
Khatena-Morse Multitalent Perception Inventory (KMMPI),
c.
Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT),
d.
Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), and/or the
e.
Wide Range Achievement Test IV (WRAT IV).
Step 3: Once the screening and testing process is
complete, the Sam Rayburn ISD GT committee will make decisions on placement of
students based on each individual’s testing results.

Assessment of testing results by GT committee.

Parents of students who are selected for placement into the GT program
will have to sign a permission to participate form. Parents have the right
refuse having their child participate in the GT program.
3.
Classroom teachers are notified of results of students who are identified
as GT.

If a student is not identified as GT, the parent/guardian has the right
to request an appeal. Parents/Guardians must:
a.
submit a letter to the Principal outlining the nature of the concern
within ten school days after the identification letter is sent, and
b.
provide supporting documentation that provides evidence that the child’s
knowledge, skills, and abilities are superior to those demonstrated and measured
by school personnel. [Note: Testing from an outside source will be considered,
but Sam Rayburn ISD is not responsible for any costs incurred if a parent
chooses to obtain information this way. ]
5.
The GT committee will review the appeal within one week and make a
decision concerning placement of the student. All appeal decisions are final.
Step 4: A student who is identified as gifted can
be given an array of differentiated learning opportunities that are commensurate
with their abilities. This does not mean extra work for gifted students; it
simply means work different than other students. Gifted students may also be
given special opportunities, flexible pacing, acceleration options, and/or
guided and independent research in areas of interest.
Step 5: Once a student receives GT services, those
services will continue on an annual basis based on the GT committee and parental
review. Students can be placed on furlough from the GT program if grades do not
meet requirements, for health reasons, and at the request of a parent.
Sam Rayburn ISD looks forward to meeting the challenges of
